practice philosophy

Even as an engineer I understood that there is much that applied western science does not fully understand about the human body and healing. The body is an amazing complex system that nourishes, defends, and communicates with each and every part in ways that TCM has understood for thousands of years but that we in the west are still learning. I believe that in order to fully heal, the body and mind must strive for balance. This means eating an optimal diet that nourishes the parts of the body that are struggling; addressing emotional issues that cause anger, frustration, over thinking and grief; and ensuring that physical activity is adequately balanced with rest. I look forward to meeting you wherever you are on your path and work with you to achieving greater balance with your health, emotions, and life.

why I love what I do

I am amazed that to this day women often simply live with menstrual pain, post-natal exhaustion, and the debilitating effects of menopause without realizing that it does not necessarily have to be this way. In many instances these issues are caused by a range of underlying disharmonies within the body and can be addressed with appropriate treatment to bring the body back into balance. TCM has a history of supporting women’s reproductive health and fully believes that the health of the parents will have a great impact on the health of the child. Pregnancy is a time when women can “reset” their bodies to address long standing disharmonies and, depending on the quality of post-natal care, mother and child can thrive. While not all disharmonies can be relieved immediately (some will take a long time to come to balance), I enjoy seeing the immediate effects of treatment on pain reduction due to stagnation in the body, or reduction of night sweats due to tonification of Yin. And I enjoy working with women to understand that they do not have to “live with” certain conditions and help them take charge of their health.

education and credentials

I am registered with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario as a registered Acupuncturist. I’m currently teaching TCM classes at the International Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine here in Ottawa. Prior to TCM, I received my M.Eng in Civil engineering in 2009 and have worked for the federal government for much of my career.

what I do when i’m not working

I have a soft spot for rescue dogs and currently own two that I adopted from the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. This summer I will be dragon boat racing for the first time and look forward to training and competing with my new teammates. I enjoy surfing and stand up paddleboard in the summer and love to travel. New places, foods, and activities bring zest to life and I love sharing these with my family. I recently took up Salsa dancing and am amazed at the coordination, balance and non-verbal communication skills needed to make this work! I really enjoy teaching TCM classes to students and finding the best ways to impart complex concepts in ways that they can grasp and retain. Acupuncture points are like interesting characters, each with their own unique name and healing ability and I love discussing these with my class in order to get them as excited about acupuncture as I am.
