Does this sound familiar…
You go to your medical practitioner complaining of what’s starting to feel like a laundry list of symptoms, and you may have even run some tests. But then everything comes back in the “normal range” so your persisting symptoms get dismissed and no further investigation is done. Sigh.
Unfortunately many medical practitioners don’t have the time, and simply aren’t equipped to go deeper, and investigate the root causes of the various hormonal health issues that so many women face these days.
Hormone health is more than just about your period.
Your hormones make you feel well and balanced. When something is off you can feel a whole lot of symptoms that you might not even think are related to hormones.
What are some common signs of hormone imbalance?
Low energy, feeling lethargic or just “blah”
Brain fog, lack of focus and poor memory
Weight gain in specific areas and an inability to lose weight
Mood issues like irritability, depression and anxiety
Lack of motivation or drive
Cravings, especially for sugar, carbs, salty and crunchy foods
Poor quality sleep and insomnia
Lacking libido or no sex drive
Acne, particularly in specific areas such as the jawline
Tender, lumpy breasts or changes in breast tissue
Hot flashes or night sweats
Sore, achy joints
Digestive problems like constipation and/or diarrhea
You are probably tired of feeling exhausted all the time.
You’re frustrated that you can’t find answers or solutions to your laundry list of symptoms.
Your intuition is telling you that there’s something off, but you haven’t found a medical professional that can find anything wrong with you.
You may have tried to follow the latest hormone balancing diet that you’ve read about in a book or on the internet, but you haven’t seen any real changes.
You just don’t feel like yourself, and you’re convinced that it’s your hormones, but you have no idea where to start.
Does this sound like you? Tired of this? Ready to try something else? That’s where we come in.

The Impact of Stress on our Hormones
While there are many contributing factors to our hormones going “out of whack” and producing these kinds of symptoms, there is one factor that can not only be a direct cause, but can also be a tipping point in many other factors – and that’s STRESS.
This is where adrenal health comes into the spotlight!
You might have heard about a term called “Adrenal Fatigue” that is often dismissed as something that doesn’t really exist. Well, we like to call it “Adrenal Dysregulation”, and yes, it does exist! There is a lot of science behind this topic and it’s finally beginning to be accepted as a real medical problem. The adrenals are the walnut-sized glands located just above the kidneys. They are considered the glands of stress as they help the body to navigate its “fight or flight” response when it’s faced with a threat by signalling the production of the critical survival hormones: adrenaline (epinephrine), noradrenaline (norepinephrine) and cortisol.
However, they also produce the important sex hormones: testosterone, estrogen and progesterone, and the adrenals have direct connections to other hormone producing organs in the body such as the ovaries (in women) and testes (in men), the thyroid gland, and of course the brain. So, you can see why the adrenals may be small but are incredibly mighty! Adrenal health is often a key area that needs attention in order to fully restore optimal hormone balance.
When our adrenal health is compromised by chronic stress, whether it is physical, mental or emotional stress – a domino effect can ensue causing a whole lot of hormonal disharmony.
If you think chronic stress may be playing a role in your current health issues, we can give you the tools you need to get re-balanced and back on track.
Your Blood Tests say things are “normal”…but they might not be
If you’ve been to your doctor and run through a number of blood tests, only to have everything come back as “normal” because the values fall within the standard lab ranges – this does NOT necessarily mean that everything is fine, especially if you’re still symptomatic.
Testing for a thyroid imbalance is the perfect example of this. Most thyroid problems go undiagnosed for years. If you fall anywhere in the “normal” range, symptoms such as fatigue or weight gain are dismissed as being unrelated to thyroid function.
However, most Naturopathic Doctors feel the laboratory ranges that determine whether thyroid hormones such as TSH, T4 and T3 are “optimal” are far too broad. So, we tend to evaluate the results using a narrower range, what we call a “functional range” as well as taking the patient’s symptoms into consideration – even if the blood test results indicate “normal”. This applies to many other hormones and blood tests as well.
Here’s why we don’t just rely on blood tests anymore. Our holistic Hormone Balancing Program involves a much deeper investigation
At Awaken Life Centre for Fertility & Hormone Health, not only is our interpretation of standard blood testing different (as our “optimal ranges” are much narrower), but we have access to more comprehensive testing.
Blood tests are not the only way to determine our hormone status, in fact it’s necessarily not even the most comprehensive or the most accurate method of measuring our hormone status. Blood levels of some hormones fluctuate daily and so these tests are often not a reliable measure. In our clinic, we often use saliva and urine hormone testing. These types of tests are incredibly useful tools to uncovering even subtle hormone imbalances – especially when dealing with more complex diagnoses such as thyroid & adrenal dysfunction, and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) – or combinations of these conditions.
How we can help YOU restore balance to your hormones
The area of hormone balance is one where conventional medicine fails to provide solutions that affect real change. Taking a synthetic medication such as oral contraceptives (“the pill”) or a thyroid medication or any synthetic hormone for that matter, is never going to help you achieve balance. These treatments, in some chases might be useful and even necessary, but in most women they mask what is really going on in the body, and your hormones tend to go out of balance again once you stop taking it. Re-balancing a woman’s delicate hormonal chemistry is much more complex and requires an approach that involves identifying the root causes of the imbalances, and working with the entire endocrine system and entire body to get things working naturally, on its own.
That’s the approach we take at Awaken Life Centre for Fertility & Hormone Health
